 ACTIVITIES

LAKE SWIMMING

The lake at Chassenon, award winning for its clean waters,  includes a safe swimming area and sandy beach with snack bar. You can hire pedallos or venture into the deeper waters for inflatable wipe-out adventures, or just a good swim. Open June - early September.

BEACHES

There are 140km of Vendée beaches to discover, some with shops, restaurants and life guards, like La Tranche sur Mer, and others wild and open like La Faute sur Mer. Gently shelving sands are the norm, perfect for families.

HISTORIC FONTENAY

The tourist office at Fontenay has a series of self-guide maps for you to explore this historic town, 3km from the house. The best views are from the battlements of the Donjon les Cimes park behind the cathedral.

BIKING

You’ll find hundreds of kilometers of paved and off-road riding trails in the Mervent Forest and across the Vendee. Cycle through the forest to Vouvant, pretty medieval village, or to Fontenay to explore its medieval centre.

HIKING

Bring your walking shoes, for once you get started walking the forest's hiking trails, you aren’t going to want to stop. All of the trails are clearly marked according to level of expertise with booklets available from Fontenay tourist information.

PUY DU FOU

The award winning theme park Puy du Fou is an unforgettable experience. An hour from the house, you can book tickets in advance at the Tourist Information in Fontenay. The vikings, Romans, Knights of the Round Table, Spanish dancing horses and trenches of World War One await you. Breathtaking..

ISLANDS

The island of Ile de Re is easily reached 45 mins by car. You can take your bikes, park on the La Rochelle side of the bridge and cycle over for free, or drive across the toll bridge and hire bikes on the island for awonderfulexploration of its silver sand beaches & quayside restaurants.

PARKS and ZOOS

Mervent Forest holds a wonderful fun park, the Parc Pierre Brune, and also Mervent Zoo, which has a variety of animals and an open monkey enclosure where you can walk among the primates.

RIDING & FISHING

There are stables in Fontenay where you can book horse riding during your stay and see some of the surrounding countryside on a gentle hack.
Fishing permits are available from the Tourist Information to fish in the rivers, or keen anglers can check out Pescalis.com, nearby international fishing centre.
Useful Information:

  • August is shooting star season, bring your binoculars!
  • Most French supermarkets shut on Sundays, but Carrefour City opposite Fontenay Cathedral is open until 1pm.
  • We provide bedding and 1 bath towel per person, but bring beach towels if you are going to the beach or lake.
  • You can drink the tap water - let's reduce the waste of plastic bottles.
  • Most restaurants like you to book in advance if you can.  We can send you details of our favourite local restaurants.
  • The local swimming pools require men to wear trunks, not swim shorts.
  • Send us your postal address when you book and we will send you a pack of tourist brochures of the area to help you plan your stay.
