Chez Chartres

Holiday with friends and family - conviviality in rural French Vendée

gardens

The house was built on the site of an ancient vineyard, and there are 2000 square meters of gardens attached.

Front gardens and orchard
The gardens are fully enclosed and gated. The front drive and gardens include an orchard area which has pear trees, apple trees, cherries, peaches, and plums. Just help yourselves to whatever fruit is in season!
Our friendly French neighbours' gardens border the east and west side of the gardens. To the west is an area of newbuild properties, where a number of new properties have been built over the past couple of years.

South gardens
The south (rear) garden is overlooked by the sunny terrace, and beyond is a lovely view over open farmland, stretching to the spire of Fontenay Cathedral which is visible in the distance. We often see rabbits and hedgehogs and even red squirrels in the garden. The west side of the garden has a 6 foot wooden fence, over which is our neighbour's garden and house.

To the east side of the house is a large clothes line for freshly drying any washing you might have.

Games
For entertainment, there is a boules set which can be played on the lawns, or in the official boules sandpit for the village, just down the road! We also have a croquet set.

There is a children's 'Portique': 2 swings and a slide and small climbing wall, positioned in the front garden, aimed at children age 12 or under.

Tennis racquets are available in the games cupboard, and the village tennis court is again just down the road behind the Mairie, about 5 minutes walk from the house.
